Marina Flower

This week at JAI our challenge is to case Delys.
And this is the card I decided to case, isn’t it pretty!



My next club hostess asked if I would teach them how to make the ribbon flowers I do. So I thought I would case this card and use a ribbon flower rather than the punched flower as Delys has done.



When I was reading Delys’ description of the card, she said her background panel was done using a technique called Crayon Resist Technique.  It didn’t look like what I think of as crayon resist. I thought of the Crayon Resist tutorial done by Danielle Daws for JAI here if you’d like to see it.  So I decided to google the term to see if I could figure out how Delys had created her background. 

I didn’t find it but I did find a technique called Crayon Rubbed Embossing that I had never seen before. I thought it looked very effective and so I decided to try it on my card instead but I have used the same embossing folder as Delys.  There is a Splitcoaststampers tutorial by Lydia Fiedler here if you’d like to try it too. It is a very different way of using your embossing folders.  I really like how it turned out and  now I will be able to teach my club ladies 2 beautiful new techniques this month :)

Ingredients :
Stamps : sincere salutations
Card : white, basic grey
Ink : stazon, marina mist
Other : marina mist satin ribbon, antique brad, white crayon, brayer, finial press ef, bird punch, scallop trim border punch

50 wishes

I was asked to make a birthday card for the librarian at my daughters’ school this week.  I saw a wonderful sketch challenge at Paper Players and decided to use that as my inspiration.
 

She was turning 50 and I could have put a big 50 on it, but decided against it.  I wanted to make it look special though so I thought I would do those lovely ribbon flowers again.  This time I used the 1” circle punch for one of the flowers so that I had 2 different sizes, as in the sketch.



The card was for all the staff at school to sign, so I felt a bit stressed about it.  Hopefully she liked it and the rest of the staff did too!

Ingredients :
Stamps : Sincere salutations
Card : regal rose, pip, pink pirouette, very vanilla, espresso, crumb cake
Ink : espresso, crumb cake, river rock
Other : big shot, finial press, polka dot, lots of tags, rhinestone brads, rhinestones, beautiful wings, wide oval punch, little leaves, pip satin ribbon, sticky strip, circle punches, thin espresso taffeta ribbon

My Think Pink card won another challenge at SUO Challenges this week too!  Very exciting!

Monochromatic Flutter

The challenge at Just Add Ink this week is Monochrome and I love monochromatic cards so just had to play along with this one.  Monochromatic means using tones of the one colour, but in card making I assume it means to use one plus a neutral.  I did cheat slightly though because I used black to stamp the butterflies and coloured their bodies with choc chip.  I’d still class it as a monochromatic card though – Hopefully they do too!  I decided to use my favourite Stampin Up colour, Baja Breeze and its darker shade Not Quite Navy with vanilla as my neutral.




I used the grid technique on the background piece using baja to sponge and NQN to stamp the images.  I stamped the butterfly in choc chip on the vanilla piece but also stamped them onto shimmery white with stazon and then watercoloured them only using Baja, NQN and a touch of choc for the bodies.  Then I cut them out and stuck them on top of the vanilla piece using mini glue dots.  I realised that you can really bend the shimmer white card and it gave the butterflies a lot of extra dimension.  Plus it gives them a pretty shimmer.
So as you can imagine after doing all that it was not a quick and easy card.  But the hardest part about it was tearing my background grid piece!  Stamping 411 have another wonderful sketch challenge this week and I decided to incorporate both of these challenges into the one card.  It meant that I had to tear my background though and it was hard for me to do it because I really liked how it was.  Anyway I am very happy with the end result I think it actually looks really nice torn now, thanks Stampin 411 for making me do it!  I just finished it off with a birthday sentiment which I stamped with NQN and clear embossed.

Ingredients :
Stamps : because i care, all a flutter, elements of style, music notes wheel, friendly words wheel, sincere salutations
Card : NQN, very vanilla, Baja breeze, naturals ivory, shimmery white
Ink :  baja breeze, NQN, stazon, choc chip, versamark
Other :  mini glue dots, aqua painter, sponge, clear embossing powder

I was having trouble rolling the wheels straight and evenly and I remembered a tip I’d read once and decided to give it a try.  Instead of holding the handle and pushing away or toward yourself, you put the handle down on the table and roll it back.  Amazingly I found it heaps easier and it worked really well for me.  Unfortunately I can’t remember who had this tip to give them credit, but next time your “wheeling” give it a try!
